Roman Battle Tactics

by Czar C.

In Rome, the battle tactics had been simple but the Romans realized that they would need to take a more crafty approach to war, so the Romans adapted to a more mathematical approach.  The Romans divided into three groups.  The first line of soldiers the hastati, which means spear-bearer. They were the weakest and most inexperienced soldiers. The second line was the Principiis.  They were experienced and tough. The third line was the triarii.  They were the most experienced and toughest of the army.  There was a phrase in Rome saying, “It has come to the triarii,” a saying said in the most desperate of times. This organization was the reason the Romans prevailed.
