South America

By Czar C.

The South American continent is a very interesting place. It has a population of 385,742,554 which is only the 5th most populated continent in the world. One country in South America that I found interesting was Chile: 80% mountains, 100% fantastic! Even though Chile is a very mountainous country it is still highly populated  -- 16,136,000 people. Chile extends like a ribbon down the west coast of South America for over 4,000 kilometers—but averages only 150 kilometers wide. The most commonly spoken language in Chile is Spanish. These are some statistics about Chile.

Games and how you’re affected

By Emily G.

When you’re playing a game you’re probably thinking, hey it’s not going to affect my grade, well it will! Spending too much time on the computer or a game system will start to affect you; you’ll start to see that your grades will drop only because you’re just playing a game. Think of it this way, you come home from school and you say, “I’ll do my homework later, I’m going to get on my favorite role-playing game.” Truly, you’ll forget all about your homework and never do it and when you get to school you’ll be saying that you wish you had done your homework first before you got on a game. See, the problem is with new advanced technology, kids are less focused in class; they have I-phones or I-pads and I-touch (all that fancy stuff) and they are not learning, and when they get home, it’s the same as always -- “I’ll do my homework later.” You have to start paying attention or your grades will fall!!!!

The Star Spangled Banner History

By Emily G.

The star spangled banner was created by Mary Young Pickers Gill, when she made the flag she was ask to make to flags a lager flag and a small flag for bad weather, she was also ask to sow  15 star and 15 stripes, because that was the number of states in the union. The flag was made because the Americans hope that the huge flag would be visible to the English fleet and that it would also lift the spirits of the Baltimoreans. Allowing them to see this flag fly in defiance of the British. In September 14, 1814 the flag was still waving in the breeze after twenty-five hours of heavy bombardment by the British. The British were so discouraged to see the Star Spangled Banner still there!  The flag we have to day the thirteen stripes represent the 13 original colonies Of the United States and the 50 star represent the 50  states in the union, the red, white, & blue stand for the blood the was shed for freedom, purity or purpose, and loyalty to the cause of freedom.

The Fascinating World of Science

 by Isaih A.

Think about the world with out science we would not have entertainment center, games such

As the xbox360, playstaion3, psp, or even phones would not have been developed if we knew

Nothing about science. Science is the key to our future if we never knew something about it

we would be like were back in the stone age. Science is a gift that keeps on giving and for that reason

why I choose to talk about science.

Interview of Czar C.

Czar C.

Q: What band instrument do you play?

A: Baritone. It is a brass instrument that is about half the size of a sixth grader.  You put your mouth on the mouthpiece and make a buzz sound with your mouth. You have to take deep breathes every once in a while because whenever you buzz into the baritone, the air makes the noise.  I’ve been playing the baritone for two years now.  The previous band teacher Mr. Chapel suggested I learn it.

Q: Do you want to try something new or just stay with the same band instrument?

A: I want to stay with the one I already have because I’ve found that I’m very good at playing it.

Q: Do you have a favorite song to play?

A: No, I really don’t have a favorite song to play.  I like marching songs. The way the rhythm flows whenever we’re playing a marching song appeals to me.  But I like Mozart and Beethoven, too.

Q: Do you want to become a professional band player when you grow up?

A:  Possibly, but I find it more of a hobby.  I want to be a robotic engineer.

Q:  How do you feel about playing a band instrument?

A: I think its pretty fun but it takes a lot of hard work and stuff. It takes dedication.  You’ve got to focus on your instrument and you’ve got to practice. So sometimes I don’t get to hang out with my friends as much as I’d like to.

Dream Killers

 by Isaih A.

Here is a little advice for you party rockers out there

If you have dreams don’t let some idiot tell u your not                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      beautiful, the case might be that person might be jealous of how you look. In this world there are some good role models and bad role models and I’m not going to name them. If you’re going to follow your dreams don’t let any thing stand in your way. So all you dream crushers out there watch out because when you crush someone’s dream you also crush yours. So dream away and steer clear of dream crushers.

Interview of Mr. Henry

Czar C. : Have you had any prior experience with drama that has helped you to be a better teacher?

Mr. Henry: Absolutely. Yes.

Czar : Do you feel drama comes by instinct or by learning?

Mr. Henry: I feel in most students drama comes by instinct but even the best actor needs to be able to hone in to those skills even I need to practice.

Czar :  Are there certain traits you feel come in many good drama students?

Mr. Henry: Someone who is confident someone who is self motivated and has focus and the ability to respond one major trait would be the ability to think outside the box because it comes up much of the time in acting.

Czar : Are there any theater skills that don’t come by instinct?

Mr. Henry: Yes, much of the technical process such as stag areas or analyzing a script doesn’t usually come naturally.

Czar : Do you feel teaching drama makes you better at acting?

Mr. Henry: Yes, in fact sometimes I get my students to teach other to make them better.

History and Politics of the United States

by Madelaine S.

The history of the United States traditionally starts with the Declaration of Independence in the year 1776, although its territory was inhabited by Native Americans since prehistoric times and then by European colonists who followed the voyages of Christopher Columbus starting in 1492. The government of the United States is based on a written constitution, the shortest in the world in fact. The constitution consists of a preamble, seven articles, and twenty seven amendments. From this document, the entire federal government was created. It is a living document whose interpretation has changed overtime.

Bullying: How do you want to be remembered?

By: Madison B.

Have you been bullied before on the internet? Has one of your friends been bullied before on the internet? Chances are you or one of your friends have been called a nasty name online or been threatened over the internet.

Actually, 42 percent of students have been bullied online. One out of four of these students have been attacked over the internet more than once. Also, about 35 percent of students have been threatened online and 58 percent of students have reported having something said to them or about them in a negative manner online.

Bullying isn’t always online, though. The National Education Association has estimated that 160,000 students miss school everyday because they are afraid of being attacked or intimidated at school by other students. 1 in 7 kids between the grades of kindergarten and 12th grade are either bullies or bully victims. Also, 30 percent of students between sixth and tenth grade are involved with moderate or frequent bullying.

Is this how you want to be remembered? If you do bully other students, think of it this way, when someone complements you you’ll remember it for the rest of the class period, but when you’re called a mean name you’ll remember it all day. It’s the same concept. When you continuously make fun of someone, that’s all they remember of you.

My mom was picked on by one girl in high school. My mom only remembers her as a brat who made her freshmen and sophomore year of high school horrible. My mom doesn’t remember any of the nice things she said to her, but my mom can recite all the mean and nasty remarks she made to my mom word-for-word.

Is this what you want to remembered as? Think how it feels when you’re picked on. It doesn’t feel so great, does it? Instead of picking on people, stand up for them when someone else calls them a mean name, because they’ll remember you as the person who stood up for them.

Interview with Emily G.

MB: What is your major and why did you pick it?

EG: Art is my major.  I picked it because it’s what I’m best at.

MB: What’s your favorite class and why?

EG:  My favorite class would have to be journalism. I like it because Ms. Rainey doesn’t give us any restriction on our creativity when we write.

MB: What are your opinions on JSA?

EG: Well, I sure liked the old dress code better. I really like the Safety Patrol and all the after school activities that are offered here. I just think it’s an awesome school.

MB: Do you have any advice for fifth graders picking a major?

EG: I think they should just pick wisely, because what you pick you’re stuck with for the rest of the school year. They should make sure that they love what their picking. You shouldn’t pick something you aren’t passionate about.

Math in Football- Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Algebra?

  By: Madison B.

Math is boring to most kids, right? But, what if you knew that one of America's favorite sports, Football, actually involved math? Crazy, huh?

Football deals with things like Yardage, Statistics, and it's also a business so that's Economics. These are all parts of math.

Yardage uses positive and negative numbers, which is used a lot in math. Every play in football needs a recording of a positive or negative number, on whether it was a loss or a gain.

All players are evaluated on their statistics (stats) on how well they play. For a quarterback, the stats include completed passes, interceptions, touch downs and total yardage. To calculate all of this you have to use math, therefore football has a lot of math in it.

Because football is a business, they deal with money and as we all know, essentially every aspect of money is math. The owners and managers of the football team deal with the players’ salaries and bonuses. They also pay for the venue to hold the games and the staff.

While studying math, try to think of some ways that math is used in some of you favorite activities like football, baseball, dance, soccer, softball, etc. you might be surprised.

Procrastination- Get your work done when it needs to be done

By: Madison B.
You come home, sit down at your desk and start on your homework. You do a few problems and then you get this idea that you’ll just put away. For the rest of the night you’re on your computer on Facebook, Youtube, etc.

This is call procrastination (Pro-cross-tin-a-tion). The definition of procrastination is putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. For example, homework, or other things of that nature.

Here are some ways to beat that ever so appealing form of procrastination: 1.) Go onto the parental controls area on your computer and block websites like Facebook, Myspace, Tumblr, Youtube, etc. for however long you think it’ll take you to do the homework assignment or whatever else you have to do. When you’re done with your assignment you can go back into the Parental Controls and unblock the websites. 2.) On your phones calendar, put in your assignment and have it set off an alarm when you have to do. Have it go off repeatedly so that eventually you won’t be able to say “Oh, I forgot”. These alarms will annoy you into doing your work.

Try to find ways that’ll keep your from procrastinating that’ll work for you. Look for articles and maybe even some videos online.

Kung Fu Panda II

The title of the movie I’m writing is Kung Fu Panda 2. It’s a PG movie directed by Jennifer Yuh.  It was written by Jonathan Aibeil and Glenn Berger. It’s about Po and his friends fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon, but the Dragon Warrior must come to terms with his past. It got a 7.4 rating. Jack Black (Po), Angelina Jolie (Tigress), Jackie Chan (Monkey), Seth Rogen (Mantis), David Cross (Crane) are the furious five. This movie is filled with action I hope you’ll like. It’s really funny and has lots of kung fu scenes. I really didn’t like how the peacock went into Po’s village when he was a baby and ruined the village. Overall this movie was awesome and still available on DVD. Enjoy the movie.

Mathematics: A Revolution of Math

 by Hope L.

Math, we live it every day, through classes at schools and colleges, money or how much we owe, counting, you name it! But, did you know that the Greeks started mathematics? That’s right, they did. In the B.C. times, before Televisions, iPods, Computers, Video Games, Cars or anything in the modern world or the worldwide spread of knowledge, there were ancient civilizations called the 4-civilizations.

One of the economic activities was to manage their farmlands, this was a form of ancient mathematics. They were also using early forms of algebra and arithmetic too. It just so happens, that it was organized in the Orient which was the world east of Greece.  A group under the name the Pythagoreans got together and coined the word mathematics or math which is Greek for the three words: knowledge, learning and study.  Math is also the study of quantity, space, structure, and change. However, not only the Greeks started mathematics; many other people like the Babylonians, Egyptians, Mayans, Romans, Hindu-Arabics and others also helped the math revolution begin.

Famous people like Albert Einstein, Benjamin Pierce, Galileo Galilei, and Carl Friedrich Gauss have studied mathematics and have become successful mathematicians, which are people who study math. Today, math is everywhere, on computers, in schools, at work, even all over the world. Without it we wouldn’t know what time it was, or know how many pieces of the pie there are. We should thank the ancient civilizations that started this wonderful revolution of mathematics we know today.

Get organized-Get your life under wraps

 By: Madison B.

You've got so much to do and not enough time to do it! Lets try to get all those tasks under wraps and done by the end of the night, with still some time to relax.

Make to do lists. Use a regular pieces or paper, or get a pack of long, skinny, papers and make to do lists. On the to do list make a sections. Have a Need to do section, a Want to do section and a Would be nice to do section. In the Need to do section, write down everything you have to get done that night. In the Want to do section write everything you want to do but doesn't need to be done. In the Would be nice to do section write down things that have been assigned to do in advanced (as in 3 days to a week early) that you would like to do. This way you know what is top, medium and low priority.

Do the to do's in an order. When you're starting to tackle your to do's, do a “Need to do” to do and then a “Want to do” to do. This way, you get a sense of pride from doing a high priority to do, which will motivate you to do even more, and then you do a low priority to do to keep you from stressing out over your high priority stressful to do's.

Keep your priorities in mind. Keep your “Would be nice to do” to do's for the last. This ways you do all of your high priorities first, and do your low priorities to keep you from stressing. Do your “Would be nice to do's” last. This way you do everything you need to do, some things you want to do, and maybe a few things in advanced.

Getting organized can be hard, and you need some practice, but it's definitely worth it. It brings down your stress level and makes it easier to do everything you need to do.

Q:  When your not dancing , what is your favorite thing to do?

A: Being with my son, who is 4, and we play ,play, play.

Q: If you didn’t become a dance teacher what would you have become?

Q: Are you glad to have these wonderful students this year?

A: Of course, every student I can touch with the gift of dance is a blessing and rewarding for students and myself. There is nothing better than to share my true passion with wonderful students.

Roman Battle Tactics

by Czar C.

In Rome, the battle tactics had been simple but the Romans realized that they would need to take a more crafty approach to war, so the Romans adapted to a more mathematical approach.  The Romans divided into three groups.  The first line of soldiers the hastati, which means spear-bearer. They were the weakest and most inexperienced soldiers. The second line was the Principiis.  They were experienced and tough. The third line was the triarii.  They were the most experienced and toughest of the army.  There was a phrase in Rome saying, “It has come to the triarii,” a saying said in the most desperate of times. This organization was the reason the Romans prevailed.

Nature behind the Scene

                                              By Emily G.

Everyone thinks that plants and animals are here for us to  admire but they’re not; they’re here for us to live and to grow again, not to chop down and or eat little animals.  They help us in so many ways that we don’t know.  So try not kill an animal like a mother moose or just an animal that’s endangered because of us.  In other articles that I will be writing, the featured animals will be endangered,  possibly wiped out.  Plants= seeds= trees = air= animal baby’s = more nature and less endanger species.        Save the world don’t harm little animals and if you cut done a tree re plant one so they live longer….

Shopping in your closet

    By: Madison B.

It's almost spring! That means new trends and new colors to wear, but trends come back and spring colors never go out of style. This spring, insteed of shopping all day at the mall, shop in your closet.

What does shopping in your closet mean? Shopping in your closet is when you go through all of your clothes in your closet and dresser and pull out your “Last season clothes”. Normally girls will pull out the clothes they own, depending on the season, put the rest in storage. By going through your old spring clothes, you can find clothes that are still “in style” without going out and spending a lot of money.

When your shopping in your closet for spring clothes, all you have to look for is pastel colors, lace, and light fabrics. These kinds of pieces have been in style for years. For shoes, pretty much all you need are sandals.

Spring and Summer are pretty much the same season here and Florida, so just look for what you would wear in the summer, without all the neons.

You can find great clothes that you haven't worn in a while, with  no cost to you by just searching around in your closet. It's fun and exciting if you think “I'm getting new clothes”. This way you think your buying all these nice new clothes, but you spent nothing on them. You can always check out second hand stores when shopping for new clothes, you can find some great in season clothes for a fraction fo the retail price.

Oceanography, Geography of the Sea

Have you ever wondered about the oceans in the sea? Or wanted to study the ocean when you grow up? The geography of the sea is called oceanography also known as oceanology or marine science and it’s part of the branches of Earth Science. The roots of oceanography go back to tens of thousands of years when people started to venture from their coastlines on rafts. These were the first seasurfing explorers, navigators and the first oceanographers began to pay attention to the ocean in many ways. They observed waves, storms, tides and currents that carried their rafts away in certain directions at times. It wasn’t until 850 B.C. that the early naturalists and philosophers tried making sense of the enormous bodies of water they saw from the land. Because people could see the ocean from the shoreline, they believed that the world was flat. Modern oceanography began as a field of science only a little less than a few years later in the 19th century after Americans, British and Europeans launched a few expeditions to explore ocean currents, ocean life, and seafloor off their coastlines. The first science expedition to explore the world’s oceans and seafloor was the Challenger Expedition from 1872 to 1876 on board a British three-masted warship by the name of the HMS Challenger. Modern Oceanography didn’t take off until World War II when the U.S. Navy wanted to learn more about the oceans to gain fighting advantages, especially in submarine warfare. Now, oceanography is used everywhere, in the navy, the military, in research, even in science. Many new discoveries await us into the future as oceanographers use new instruments and deep submerge vehicles to help them with their research about the ocean as it changes through the waves, the seas below, and the many wonders of our oceans that surround us today.

Spring Cleaning-Keep your life and closet organized this Spring

 By: Madison B.

With Spring coming in, their be some fun shopping sprees coming up. But what about preparing for Spring shopping? Yeah, that's right, Spring Cleaning!

Before bringing in all those new clothes, clean out your closet and get rid of your old clothes. The shirts you don't like, the pants that are too short, the itchy Christmas Sweaters. By cleaning these old clothes out before you bring in your new clothes, you'll be able to have more room for those things and this will insure your closet won’t get overwhelmed and cluttered.

When doing you Spring Cleaning, don't just throw out your old clothes, donate them. Donate them to places like Goodwill and Salvation Army, this way you’re cleaning out your old clothes and also doing a good deed.

I hope spring brings you great clothes and great place to clean out your closet. Use this opportunity to give back though, people could use those old clothes.

Ms. Rainey Interview

MB: Why did you pick being a teacher as your profession?

ER:  I love to learn, and I discovered that I really loved helping other people learn. My second grade teacher Mrs. Olson always had me helping the other kids and I loved doing it. I still do.

MB: If you could go back in time would you change anything for or about your teaching career?

ER:  Everything I’ve learned has brought me to where I am now, the good and the bad. No, I wouldn’t change anything.

MB: What’s your favorite part of teaching?

ER:  Working with the students, and seeing that flash of “Oh! I got it!”show on their faces. At that moment I know my life is well spent.

MB: Do you have any advice for aspiring teachers?

ER:  Go into teaching with your heart because you’re not going to get rich monetarily, but you will have a rich soul. You may not get fame, as you would as a lawyer or a doctor or a football player, but when an adult comes up to you in a store and says “Ms. Rainey, this is my son and I want him in your class because I was in your class.” That’s the best feeling. Make sure you’re doing it to improve the universe.

MB: If you could go back in time, would you still be a teacher?

ER:  Absolutely. However, I do not limit myself to just teaching in a class room.  I write, I collect things, I sell on Ebay, I have a ministry and I sing in the choir. I have a very full life, and teaching is a vital part of that life but it isn’t the only thing in it.

MB: How do you balance your writing career and your teaching career?

ER:  When I’m at school I’m teaching 110% of the time, but when I’m at home I spend time working on my other creations. To not waste time, I don’t watch television. I use time that most people use watching television I spend my time writing, ministering, singing *laughing* and I also save time by not cleaning my house.

Dear Payton,

I have a crush on a boy who is in three of my classes.  I want to tell him I like him but I’m too nervous. What should I do?

Nervously yours,

Tru

Dear Tru,

Friends hang out with each other.  They have similar interests and talk to each other a lot  -- sometimes too much!  If you like him, and he likes you, you will be spending time with each other and your nervousness will fade.  You shouldn’t have to tell him how you feel, you should both already know it.  Relax.  Get to know him as a friend.  Then you’ll know how he feels, too.

Your Friend,
Payton

Potato Power

  By: Madison B.

You know, Solar Power, Wind Power and maybe even Water power, but what about Potato Power?

Potatoes, or any vegetable or fruit that contains liquid, can produce electricity when two different kinds of metals (like Zinc, steel, aluminum, cooper, etc.) are punctured into the vegetable.

The metals are electrodes, and they pass the energy through the potato. The moisture of the potato helps produce the electricity by creating a chemical reaction with the two metals, allowing the energy to pass through.

You’ll need a multimeter to measure the voltage. You won’t get much voltage out of the potato, not even a full volt, depending on the size of the potato.

Any vegetable or fruit that has a liquid in it can produce electricity. It’s an amazing project to do and it’s fun. Why don’t you try it for yourself?

Stress- What's the little thing stressing you out?

  By: Madison B.

Even though you're a teenager, and parents and other adults may tell you that there’s no way that you can be stressed, but we all know teenagers can have extremely hectic and stressful lives.

Girls tend to be stressed about school-related topics. Girls tend to believe that they have to be extraordinary in all aspects of their lives; this means we tend to be stressed about grades, extracurricular activities, peers opinions on their appearance and social occurrences. As the days go on girls continue to get more stress because they focus so much on their relationships with friends and teachers.

Boys still get a little bit stressed about school, but they seem to be more stressed about physical things like abilities and physical development. Boys tend to be stressed about sports abilities, physical development (as in “who's stronger”) and fitting in socially. I couldn't find many statistics on boys stress, but by going to school with boys for 5 years, it does seem plausible that boys get stressed about these topics. Boys are brought up to be the stronger, the better, the more knowledgeable of the genders, and when they realized that their not as good as someone else or a girl is better than them at something it tends to stress them out and frustrate them.

Stress can be a hard thing to manage, but it's a thing that needs to be addressed and managed. It can take a toll on your health by making you more susceptible to illness and have you gain weight. Ways to manage stress are by making to do lists, so you know what NEEDS to get done and what you WANT to get done. Also, know when you're getting stressed out. Some signs are poor judgment, moodiness, inability to relax, aches and pains, eating more or less, and nervous habits. Addressing the thing that stresses you out it the first step in understanding why you get stressed out so much.

Riddle of the Week

If a family drove to Tallahassee on Friday, stayed for three days, and left on Wednesday, how is that possible?

Their father named their family car Wednesday.

Stefanie R. interview

By Emily G.

Emily G.:  What’s it like being in drama?

Stefanie R.:  We learn tips on acting and get to be in good plays which help us get more experiences.

EG:  Do you ever get scared?

SR:  When you’re confuted you’re not scared and if you had trouble remembering your lines you’ll be scared, or nervous but when you get on the stage the feeling goes away.

EG:  Is Drama fun?

SR:  Yes, because we have a teacher who understands us and she tells us not to goof around and she just makes us feel confused to go on stage and become an actor.

EG:   How hard is it to remember your lines?

SR:  It depends if you’re committed to drama you’ll study your lines and try to remember them, if you don’t care you’ll not study and just try to forget your lines.

EG:   How long does it take to get ready?

SR:  About 2 hours to study lines one more time, to get in costume, to get our make up on, and to get the stage ready and  everything else.
