Math in Football- Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Algebra?

  By: Madison B.

Math is boring to most kids, right? But, what if you knew that one of America's favorite sports, Football, actually involved math? Crazy, huh?

Football deals with things like Yardage, Statistics, and it's also a business so that's Economics. These are all parts of math.

Yardage uses positive and negative numbers, which is used a lot in math. Every play in football needs a recording of a positive or negative number, on whether it was a loss or a gain.

All players are evaluated on their statistics (stats) on how well they play. For a quarterback, the stats include completed passes, interceptions, touch downs and total yardage. To calculate all of this you have to use math, therefore football has a lot of math in it.

Because football is a business, they deal with money and as we all know, essentially every aspect of money is math. The owners and managers of the football team deal with the players’ salaries and bonuses. They also pay for the venue to hold the games and the staff.

While studying math, try to think of some ways that math is used in some of you favorite activities like football, baseball, dance, soccer, softball, etc. you might be surprised.
